Your Romanian Roots Could Be Your Path to EU Citizenship
If your parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent was a Romanian citizen, you may be eligible to apply for Romanian citizenship by ancestry, potentially gaining access to the rights and opportunities associated with Romanian and EU citizenship.
Find out if you qualify for Romanian citizenship based on your family ancestry.
Who May Qualify for Romanian Citizenship by Ancestry?
Romanian law provides different pathways depending on how and when your ancestors lost their Romanian citizenship.
Descendants of Romanian Citizens Who Voluntarily Lost Their Citizenship
If your parent or grandparent was a Romanian citizen who voluntarily renounced Romanian citizenship in connection with emigration or naturalization abroad, you may be eligible to acquire Romanian citizenship by descent.
Descendants of Romanian Citizens Who Lost Their Citizenship Involuntarily
Romanian citizenship may also be available to descendants, up to the third degree, of former Romanian citizens who lost their citizenship against their will as a result of historical territorial changes.
This may include descendants of Romanian citizens from territories that formed part of Romania before 28 June 1940, including Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina, now located within the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
